As part of our SEWANEE PRAISES project (sewaneepraises.org), the Roberson Project team, along with members of the historic St. Mark’s Community, will travel to Virginia to connect with our counterparts at Virginia Tech and VCU as we continue collaborating on the design of a permanent memorial at the site of the segregated Kennerly School. Interior Design and Architecture students from VT and VCU have been in contact with Sewanee’s historic Black neighborhood since the spring of 2024. Through letters, Zoom meetings, and in-person conversations, the design students have been practicing “empathic design,” which centers the community’s needs and vision in preserving their history through monuments.
