ABOUT THE PROJECT:
In the historic black graveyard in Sewanee’s University Cemetery the Roberson Project has discovered 148 graves that have disappeared over the last century and a half. Using ground penetrating radar we have been able to locate these graves, but the identities of the people resting in them remain unknown. This new initiative from the Roberson Project seeks to memorialize and remember these unknown people of Sewanee who until now have been lost and forgotten.
Each bronze spike is hand-forged and, inspired by the many dogwood trees in the cemetery, surmounted by a dogwood blossom. A spike will be placed in the ground to mark each grave site.
We want these spikes to create a lasting memory of the lives and dignity of the people whose presence they mark.
You can help us shape this legacy by making a donation to the Roberson Project this Tiger Tuesday. A donation of $100 will cover the cost of manufacturing a single bronze spike. We welcome you to fund one or more of these markers.
