The Roberson Project on Race, Slavery, and Reconciliation is proud to present the photography workshop with artist Colby Caldwell on Sunday, February 15, 2026 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM. The event will start at the St. Mark’s Community Center.
Artist Colby Caldwell will guide the community members through the process of digital and analog scanning of the pool in the St. Mark’s neighborhood to produce a unique topological map of the site. Weaving both analog and digital methods of visually analyzing the pool site, the photography workshop continues to expand the community effort to remember the site and imagine its future. The event follows Vanderbilt University artist Vesna Pavlović’s reimagination of the site in the fall of 2024 and the The Air We Breathe is Not Invisible art event that took place in May 2025. Inspired by the “Swim Pool” history and memory, Pavlović collaborated with the Roberson Project and the University’s Facilities Management to turn the pool into a garden of Spanish Bluebells. Colby Caldwell (American, born 1965), once a student of history, has tested virtually every avenue of the personal uses of photography as an instrument of memory. over & under, his most recent solo show, opened at HEMPHILL in Washington, DC in May of 2022. A review in the Washington Post commented, “Caldwell communes with the forest as he denatures it, conveying the threat to the natural world in partly mangled images.” His work is featured in The Art of the State book that surveys contemporary art in his home state of North Carolina. His work is represented by HEMPHILL Art Works in Washington, DC and Tracey Morgan Gallery in Asheville, NC.Colby was a tenured Professor of Art at St. Mary’s College of Maryland from 2002-2013. He moved to Asheville, NC in 2013 and has taught at Warren Wilson College and Western Carolina University as a Visiting Professor. In 2015, he co-founded REVOLVE, an art hub that hosts and encourages experimental work. Colby is a founding member of Photo+. Currently a visiting Artist at WCU for AY 2025/26, Colby has a commission on view at the North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh, NC.
